Part 1: Eskrima, also known as Kali or Arnis, is a national martial art of the Philippines that emphasizes a “weapon first” approach, using a single stick, double sticks, a stick and knife, and various melee weapons along with empty hands. Part 2: Pentjak Silat is an Indonesian martial art that teaches many uses of weapons and empty hands through understanding Jurus (forms) with different applications from each movement. Part 3: Shorinji Kempo is a Japanese version of Shaolin Kung Fu that uses a combination of punches, kicks, open punches, locks and throws to defeat the attacker. Michael began his studies at the original Cali Academy located in Torrance, California under the direction of Guro Dan Inosanto and Richard Bustillio in 1979. In 1985 he traveled to the Philippines for a three month training tour with Grandmaster Antonio “Tatang” Ilustrisimo. Since 2005, Michael has focused on studying the art of Cabales-Serrada Escrima and has received an advanced instructor certificate under the guidance of Guro Khalid Khan.
